Hecla's Lucky Friday mine is one of the largest private employers in Shoshone County. In 2024, 90% of new hires at Lucky Friday were from local communities.
Overview
Lucky Friday is an underground silver, lead, and zinc mine in Idaho, United States, operated by Hecla Mining Company. It commenced operations in 1942 and has a current mine life of 19 years, with potential for an additional 20-30 years due to the #4 Shaft project. The mine utilizes underhand and UCB mining methods and processes ore at a 1,000 tpd mill to produce silver-lead and zinc concentrates.
Production
Production overview - 2025: silver 5260686 oz, lead 34284 t, zinc 14924 t; 2024: silver 4890949 oz, lead 31265 t, zinc 13513 t.
Processing
The plant has a full surface facility with a mill that can process 1,000 tons of ore per day. It produces silver-lead and zinc concentrates. These concentrates are shipped by truck to Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. smelter in Trail, BC, Canada.
Equipment
The principal mining methods are underhand systems with integral paste fill. The Underhand Closed Bench (UCB) mining method is also utilised. In 2023, 87% of the tons mined were produced through the UCB method. Rubber-tired equipment is used to access the veins through ramps. Access to all underground workings is via the 6,205 ft deep Silver Shaft.
Expansion
The #4 Shaft project, an internal shaft, extends 9,600 feet below the surface, providing access to higher-grade ore in the Gold Hunter/Lucky Friday Expansion Area. A surface cooling project is expected to be completed by mid-2026. Capital investment is also being directed towards a new tailings facility.

Processing
The Greenbushes operation has four processing plants: one for technical grade lithium concentrates, two for chemical grade lithium concentrates, and one for re-treating historic tailings. The processing method involves upgrading the lithium mineral from the ore using gravity, heavy media, flotation, and magnetic processes to produce a range of lithium concentrates.
Equipment
The mining fleet includes Hitachi EX3600, Hitachi EX2600, and Hitachi EX1200 / Komatsu PC1250 excavators, as well as Caterpillar 785 (140-tonne) rear dump trucks. Macmahon Holdings was awarded a seven-year contract for load and haul mining works. The operation also uses two 1250kVA Tomahawk Cummins generators and a 20,000L fuel tank for standby power at the central tailings facility.
Expansion
Talison Lithium is expanding the Greenbushes mine to increase the production of spodumene ore and lithium mineral concentrate. This expansion includes the construction of the S2 waste rock landform, the expansion of the Salt Water Gully Dam, and the development of new water management infrastructure. The development envelope for the mine is set to increase from 2,207 hectares to 2,791 hectares. A proposal for a further capacity expansion is undergoing environmental assessment.

NickelCobalt
Overview
The Cosmos Project, operated by IGO Limited, was transitioned into care and maintenance, a process expected to be concluded by 31 May 2024. This decision followed a comprehensive project review that revealed a reduced expected life of mine, delays in reaching full production capacity, and increased operating and capital costs. These factors, combined with a significant deterioration in commodity prices, impacted the project's economic viability. IGO has stated its intention to preserve the option to restart the Cosmos Project in the future should market conditions improve.
