Care And Maintenance
GoldSilver
Overview
The Fire Creek mine, located in Lander County, Nevada, is an underground gold and silver mine wholly owned by Hecla Mining Company. As of the second quarter of 2021, the mine has been placed on care and maintenance. Production at the mine continued through the first half of 2021, with revenues exceeding total capital and production costs for both 2020 and 2021. Hecla Mining is conducting studies on the hydrology, mining, and milling at the site and anticipates incurring care-and-maintenance costs until exploration success and development justify a restart of operations. The Fire Creek deposit is characterised as a low-sulfidation epithermal system with dual mineralisation types: high-grade quartz-carbonate epithermal veins and structurally controlled refractory sulfide mineralisation. The mine is part of Hecla's broader Nevada operations, which are considered a high-impact development project with significant unexplored potential.
Processing
Ore from Fire Creek was processed at the nearby Midas mill. The processing of non-refractory ore involved grinding, gravity concentration, cyanidation, CCD (counter-current decantation), and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. Hecla has also investigated the processing of Fire Creek's refractory ore at third-party facilities.
