Overview
The Lucky Friday mine had a record-breaking year for silver production in 2025, with 5.3 million ounces produced, attributed to 5% higher throughput and a 2% higher milled grade. In 2024, the mine achieved its third-best year for silver production and its best year for zinc production, also setting a record for the highest tonnes of ore mined and milled in its 80-year history. Production in 2023 was impacted by a fire, leading to a temporary suspension of operations from August, with a restart on 9 January 2024. The increase in silver production in 2022 was due to the continued implementation of the "Underhand Closed Bench" mining method.
Production
Production overview - 2025: silver 5.3 Moz, lead 34.28 kt, zinc 14.92 kt; 2024: silver 4.9 Moz, zinc 13513 t.
Processing
The mine has a concentrator facility with a current operating rate of 1,000 short tons per day, producing silver-lead and zinc concentrates. These concentrates are transported by truck to the Teck Metals Ltd. smelter in Trail, British Columbia, Canada.
Equipment
The mine utilises an underhand closed bench (UCB) mining method. The mine's primary access is the Silver Shaft, which is 18 feet in diameter and sunk to a depth of 6,200 feet. A key growth project, the #4 Shaft, is an internal shaft that reaches 9,600 feet below the surface.
Expansion
A new surface cooling project is under construction and is expected to be completed by mid-2026. In 2023, Hecla engineers were developing a system to recycle water from tailings ponds for use within the mine.

Overview
The Kwinana Lithium Hydroxide Refinery, 49% owned by IGO Limited through a joint venture, has faced significant operational challenges, operating below its nameplate capacity of 24,000 tonnes per year. The Western Australian Department of Water and Environmental Regulation renewed its operating licence until 2 March 2046 but classified it as a "high" health risk due to dust and odour complaints. In January 2026, a contract was awarded for structural, mechanical, and piping works to integrate new mechanical equipment.
Production
Production overview - 2025: lithium 2775 t.
Processing
The facility is a fully automated processing plant that converts chemical-grade lithium spodumene concentrate from the Greenbushes mine into battery-grade lithium hydroxide.
Expansion
In January 2025, IGO and Tianqi Lithium agreed to cease all work on the planned second production train (Lithium Hydroxide Plant 2). IGO has fully impaired its 49% stake in the refinery due to ongoing operational issues and challenging market conditions.

Processing
The Greenbushes operation has four processing plants: one for technical grade lithium concentrates and three for chemical grade lithium concentrates, which includes a tailings retreatment plant. Chemical Grade Plant 3 (CGP3) processed its first ore in December 2025. Processing methods include gravity, heavy media separation, flotation, and magnetic processes to produce a range of lithium concentrates.
Expansion
A capacity expansion project is underway to expand the mine to the east and south of the current site, including an additional waste rock landform, expansion of an existing waste rock landform, and expanded water storage capacity. Chemical Grade Plant 3 (CGP3), with a capacity of approximately 500,000 tonnes per year of spodumene concentrate, was commissioned in late 2025, increasing the total site capacity to around 2.1 million tonnes per annum. There is also a proposal for a potential Chemical Grade Plant 4 (CGP4).
