Kanowna Belle Operations

Western Australia, Australia · Underground

Operating
Gold
Workforce
around 200
Overview
Kanowna Belle Operations is part of Northern Star's broader Kalgoorlie Operations. The underground mine has been in operation since 1995. The deposit is categorised as a refractory, Archean lode-gold type deposit. Gold mineralisation is primarily hosted within a large porphyritic granodiorite body and is associated with the Fitzroy Shear Zone. The ore is considered "refractory" as the gold is not easily recoverable through a conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, requiring additional processing via roasting.
Production
The adjacent Kanowna Belle processing plant has an annual throughput capacity of approximately 2 million tonnes.
Processing
The adjacent Kanowna Belle processing plant has an annual throughput capacity of approximately 2 million tonnes. The facility is equipped to treat both free-milling and refractory ores, featuring a flotation circuit, a concentrate roaster circuit, and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. Ore is sourced from the Kanowna Belle and South Kalgoorlie (HBJ) underground mines for processing at the Kanowna Belle mill. The primary mining method is a form of modified open stoping, including longhole open stoping (LHOS), with open stopes backfilled with paste fill created from tailings. The ore is accessed via drives on level spacings of 30 metres.
Equipment
flotation circuit, a concentrate roaster circuit, and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit
Expansion
Recent exploration has been successful, with continued drilling at the Joplin system, located less than 300 metres from the active Velvet mining area. Mining commenced at Joplin in the December 2023 quarter. Exploration at Red Hill, 3.5 kilometres east of the processing plant, has also increased the site's Mineral Resources. As of 31 March 2024, a maiden Ore Reserve of 0.6Moz was declared at Red Hill, and the Mineral Resource for Kanowna Belle increased by 0.7Moz to 1.9Moz.

Gold
Mine life
15 years
Overview
The Hemi Development Project is located 85 kilometres south of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and is currently under development.
Production
First gold production is now anticipated to be in FY30 or the early 2030s, following a final investment decision targeted for the 2027 financial year. The definitive feasibility study forecast average annual gold production to be 530,000 ounces over the first 10 years.
Processing
The project will include a 10 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) processing plant. The processing method will be pressure oxidation (POx), which is considered an emissions-efficient gold extraction option, combined with flotation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) to achieve a high recovery rate of up to 95%.
Equipment
Key equipment for the processing circuit includes a Superior MKIII 50-65 primary gyratory crusher and two 14MW Premier ball mills. The pressure oxidation process will utilise four FELUWA MULTISAFE double hose-diaphragm pumps.
Expansion
Northern Star Resources acquired the Hemi Development Project from De Grey Mining through a court-approved Scheme of Arrangement on 5 May 2025. The project has received state environmental approval from the Environmental Protection Authority, with federal approvals still pending. The project's disturbance footprint is up to 5,830 hectares within a 22,194-hectare development envelope. A conceptual study has indicated potential for underground mining to run in parallel with the open-pit operations. Northern Star is undertaking a comprehensive review of the project's data and intends to report updated Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves estimates by May 2026. The previous owner, De Grey Mining, had estimated a capital cost of around $1 billion, which is expected to be updated by Northern Star. An exploration budget of A$225 million is forecast for FY26 across Northern Star's production centres, including Hemi.

Gold
Overview
The Mt Adrah Gold Project is located in the Lachlan Fold Belt of New South Wales. Wildcat Resources is the current owner of the project. The project's centerpiece is the Hobbs Pipe gold deposit, which has a JORC 2012-compliant Mineral Resource estimate of 20.5 million tonnes at 1.1 g/t gold for 770,000 ounces of contained gold. This deposit demonstrates continuous mineralisation from the surface. In addition to the main Hobbs Pipe deposit, the project also features several high-grade gold reef systems, including the Castor and White Deer Reefs. Historical drilling at these reefs has returned high-grade intercepts, such as 10m at 17.7 g/t Au at Castor Reef and 1.2m at 58.6 g/t Au at White Deer Reef. The project is considered to be under-explored, with systematic exploration having been limited since the 1980s.
Processing
Metallurgical test work has indicated gold recoveries of up to 92%.
Expansion
Recent exploration activities by Wildcat Resources have included a reverse circulation (RC) drilling program in April 2023 to target Hobbs Pipe-style deposits. The company has also been conducting soil sampling, with over 7,000 samples taken regionally, and geophysical studies to define further drill targets. For calendar year 2025, Wildcat has budgeted up to $1.3 million for continued exploration at Mt Adrah.
