Workforce
Up to 75 jobs affected by closure.
Overview
The Cardup quarry and associated brick manufacturing plant were mothballed in April 2023 by Austral Bricks, a subsidiary of Brickworks Limited, due to sustained financial losses and a poor market outlook in Western Australia. It was the last remaining Brickworks brick manufacturing plant in the state. The company is selling from an existing stockpile while determining the future of its Western Australian operations.
Production
Proposed expansion from 200,000 to 250,000 tonnes per annum (terminated assessment).
Expansion
Prior to closure, Brickworks sought approvals for a new kiln to improve efficiency, but was unsuccessful. A proposal to redevelop the Cardup Brickworks and expand its capacity from 200,000 to 250,000 tonnes per annum was referred to the Environmental Protection Authority of Western Australia, but the assessment was terminated.

End year
2029
Production
The quarry provides approximately 530,000 tonnes of clay and shale annually to the adjacent Horsley Park Brick Plant 23. This plant has a maximum annual production capacity of around 130 million bricks.
Processing
Clay is primarily recovered using scrapers, while shale and sandstone are extracted using excavators and haul trucks. More competent materials may require ripping by a bulldozer before excavation. No blasting is conducted at the site. The extracted materials are stockpiled and blended before being transported to the brick manufacturing plants.
Equipment
scrapers, excavators, haul trucks, and bulldozers
Expansion
The Horsley Park Plant 23 Quarry is undergoing progressive rehabilitation. A portion of the site has been successfully rehabilitated and is being redeveloped into the Oakdale East Industrial Estate. An upgrade to the adjacent Austral Bricks Plant 2 was approved, which would increase its operational throughput capacity to 130 million standard brick equivalents per annum.
