Billingham Complex

Cleveland, United Kingdom · Processing Facility

Operating
Workforce
approximately 145
Production
Approximately 1 million tons of nitrogen products for agricultural and industrial use annually.
Processing
The Billingham Complex now operates by importing ammonia to produce ammonium nitrate (AN) fertiliser and nitric acid. This follows the permanent closure of the on-site ammonia plant, a decision proposed in July 2023 and confirmed in the company's 2023 annual report. The company determined that producing ammonia at Billingham was no longer cost-competitive compared to importing it, due to high projected natural gas prices in the UK and the impact of carbon costs. The closure of the ammonia plant also ceased the production of carbon dioxide (CO2), which was a byproduct of the ammonia production process. The facility consists of three nitric acid plants and an AN fertiliser plant.
Expansion
In August 2022, CF Fertilisers UK announced the temporary halting of ammonia production at the Billingham Complex due to market conditions. Subsequently, in July 2023, the company announced a proposal to permanently close the ammonia plant. This proposal was approved in the third quarter of 2023. The decision could result in up to 38 redundancies. The company intends to continue producing ammonium nitrate and nitric acid at the site using imported ammonia to serve its UK customers.

Medicine Hat Nitrogen Complex

Alberta, Canada · Processing Facility

Operating
Opened
1976-01-01
Workforce
200
Overview
The facility produces ammonia and granular urea. It is the largest nitrogen manufacturing complex in Canada.
Production
The complex has an annual capacity of up to 1.5 million tons of nitrogen products. Its average annual gross ammonia capacity is 1,230,000 tons.
Processing
The facility produces ammonia and granular urea. It is the largest nitrogen manufacturing complex in Canada. The complex has two ammonia plants.
Expansion
An expansion in 2018 increased ammonia production by 150,000 short tons annually. CF Industries is developing process CO2 capture and sequestration for the Medicine Hat Complex as part of its goal to reduce carbon intensity.

Courtright Complex

Ontario, Canada · Processing Facility

Operating
Opened
1966-01-01
Workforce
Approximately 200 permanent employees.
Overview
The Courtright Complex is a nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing facility that produces ammonia, granular urea, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN), and diesel exhaust fluid.
Production
The facility has an annual capacity of up to 1.0 million tons of nitrogen products. In 2018, almost 100,000 tons of fertilizer produced at Courtright was used by farmers in Canada.
Processing
The Courtright Complex is a nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing facility. It produces ammonia, and some of that ammonia is upgraded into other products like granular urea, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN), and diesel exhaust fluid. The facility includes an anhydrous ammonia plant, a nitric acid plant, a nitrogen solutions plant, and a urea plant. In 2015, a project was initiated to revamp the urea plant to increase output by 50% to 1100 MTD. This debottlenecking project, which also aimed to increase production of urea-based products by 130,000 tons, was expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Expansion
In 2015, a project was initiated to revamp the urea plant to increase output by 50% to 1100 MTD, expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2017. In August 2024, CF Industries noted the complex's potential to become a regional hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) hub for low-carbon ammonia production.

Yazoo City Nitrogen Complex

Mississippi, United States · Processing Facility

Care And Maintenance
Opened
1951-01-01
Production
The facility has an average annual gross ammonia capacity of 570,000 tons. The company-wide gross ammonia production for 2026 is forecast to be approximately 9.5 million tons, reflecting the impact of the Yazoo City outage.
Processing
The complex uses the Haber-Bosch process to manufacture ammonia. Most of the ammonia produced is upgraded into nitrogen fertilisers like UAN and AN, or into diesel exhaust fluid. The ammonium nitrate is used as a fertiliser and by the mining industry as a component in explosives.
Expansion
In July 2024, CF Industries announced it is proceeding with a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project at the complex. The company will invest approximately $100 million to build a CO2 dehydration and compression unit. The project is designed to capture and permanently store up to 500,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, with sequestration, handled by ExxonMobil, expected to begin in 2028. This will enable the facility to produce nitrogen products with a lower carbon intensity. An explosion and anhydrous ammonia leak occurred at the plant in November 2025, which resulted in the current operational shutdown.

Waggaman Complex

Louisiana, United States · Processing Facility

Operating
Workforce
Approximately 90.
Production
The Waggaman Complex has a nameplate capacity of 880,000 tons of ammonia annually.
Processing
The facility has a nameplate gross ammonia capacity of 880,000 tons per year. It has the capability to transport ammonia by pipeline, barge, truck and rail.
Equipment
38,500-ton ammonia storage tank
Expansion
CF Industries plans to implement carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies at the site on an accelerated timeline to produce low-carbon ammonia. As part of the acquisition, CF Industries entered into a long-term offtake agreement to supply up to 200,000 tons of ammonia per year to Dyno Nobel, a subsidiary of Incitec Pivot Limited.
