Iron Ore (Magnetite)
Overview
The Austeel Project is a non-operational magnetite iron ore project owned by Mineralogy Pty Ltd. It is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately 80 to 85 kilometres south-west of Karratha, near Cape Preston. The project was first proposed in the late 1990s and early 2000s as an integrated mining and downstream processing operation. The plan involved an open-pit mine and a processing plant to produce concentrated iron ore pellets, direct reduced iron (DRI), and hot briquetted iron (HBI).
Production
Proposed production figures included 4.6 million tonnes per year of direct reduced iron and 6.9 million tonnes of concentrated iron ore pellets. Another source cited proposed production of up to 13.8 million tonnes per annum of pellet iron and 4.7 million tonnes per annum of DRI and/or HBI.
Processing
upgrading the magnetite ore through magnetic separation to create a high-grade concentrate for the production of pellets and DRI/HBI.

Sino Iron Project

Iron Ore (Magnetite)
Mine life
30 years
Workforce
approximately 3,000 direct employees and contractors
Production
In 2024, the Sino Iron project exported approximately 14.9 million wet metric tonnes of concentrate. This was a reduction from over 21 million wet metric tonnes produced in 2023. The decrease was due to the mine pit reaching the boundary of its current approved footprint. In late 2024, the project shipped its 170 millionth tonne of concentrate since operations began.
Processing
The operation uses traditional open-pit mining techniques. Ore is processed on-site through in-pit crushers, autogenous grinding mills, and ball mills. Magnetic separation is used to produce a high-grade, premium magnetite concentrate with 65% iron content and low impurities. The concentrate is transported as a slurry via a 30km pipeline to the port at Cape Preston, where it is dewatered before export. The facility is supported by a 480MW power station and a 140 megalitres per day desalination plant.
Equipment
The mining fleet includes some of the largest equipment in Australia. This includes RH400 and CAT 6090 hydraulic face shovels, which weigh close to 1,000 tonnes and have a loading capacity of 4,500 tonnes of ore per hour. The haul truck fleet includes diesel-electric MT6300 trucks, each with a capacity of around 360 tonnes. The drill fleet consists of SKF15 'down-the-hole' drills and Pit Viper 351 rotary drills. In 2024, five new remotely-controlled autonomous drills were deployed. The processing plant has four in-pit crushers.
Expansion
In June 2025, the State of Western Australia approved the 2023 Mine Continuation Proposals (MCPs). These proposals allow for the extension of the mine pit and waste rock and tailings storage facilities within areas where CITIC companies have pre-existing access rights. This approval is considered a critical first step towards the mine returning to previous production levels and securing its longer-term operational certainty.
