2020
Workforce
The reopening in 2021 was expected to restore 300 direct jobs and up to 750 indirect jobs. An earlier record mentioned 438 employees.
Overview
The Coal Valley Mine is a surface mine located in West Central Alberta, south of the Town of Edson. Mining is conducted using truck and shovel/loader and dragline methods. The mine was placed on care and maintenance in June 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restarted production in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Production
coal: 2.3 Mt
Processing
The mine includes a coal wash plant to process the run-of-mine coal. The process involves crushing, breaking, and sizing the coal before it undergoes density separation to clean the organic material from refuse. The plant has the capacity to wash 4 million tonnes of clean coal per year.
Equipment
The mine utilises truck/shovel and dragline equipment.
Expansion
Prairie Mines and Royalty applied to extend the Pit 26 site by 68 hectares. This expansion falls within the current Coal Valley Mine boundaries.

Processing
Coal is transported via a conveyor belt system to crushers. High-sulfur "waste coal" is sent by truck to the Rosebud Power Plant for combustion.
Equipment
Mining methods include dragline and truck and shovel/loader. Equipment includes Marion 8050 and Marion 8200 draglines and a 4.2-mile long overland conveyor belt.
Expansion
In August 2025, the U.S. Department of the Interior approved a mining plan modification for the Rosebud Mine, located in Rosebud and Treasure counties. This decision allows for the extraction of approximately 33.75 million tons of federal coal and extends the mine's operation. The expansion covers nearly 1,900 acres of new mining area. The mine has several active permit areas, including Area A, Area B, Area C, and Area F. As of December 2023, 582 acres had been disturbed in the Area F project area, with 8.5 million tons of coal produced from this area. An application for a fifth amendment (AM5) to the operating permit for Area B would increase the permit area by 9,108 acres to a total of 15,153 acres and allow for the extraction of an additional 42.9 million tons of coal.

Mine life
12 years
Workforce
Once operational, the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is expected to create over 800 direct jobs. In 2023, Skeena reported that its workforce was 12% Indigenous.
Overview
The Eskay Creek Gold-Silver Project, wholly owned and operated by Skeena Resources Limited, is a past-producing mine being redeveloped as a conventional truck and shovel open-pit operation. The project is fully permitted and advanced to the construction phase, with initial production and cash flow anticipated in the second quarter of 2027. The project received its Environmental Assessment Certificate in January 2026, a major milestone reached in partnership with the Tahltan Nation. The total pre-production capital cost is estimated at C$713 million.
Production
First 5 years of operation: Average annual production of 455,000 ounces of gold. First 10 years of operation: Average annual production of 370,000 ounces of gold. Average annual production (life of mine): Between 0.20 and 0.25 million ounces of gold and between 5.5 and 7.0 million ounces of silver.
Processing
The processing plant will have an initial throughput capacity of 3 million tonnes per year. The process involves grinding the ore, followed by a flotation circuit to produce a combined gold-silver concentrate. This concentrate will then be transported to third-party smelters.

Production
Expected to produce between 170,000 and 230,000 ounces of gold in 2026. Gold production is anticipated to exceed 300,000 ounces per year starting in 2027. The average annual gold production over the first six years is estimated at 300,000 ounces.
Processing
The processing plant uses conventional crushing, grinding, gravity concentration, pre-oxidation, gold leaching by cyanidation, and a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit to produce gold doré bars. The plant has a throughput capacity of 4,000 tonnes per day, with potential expansion to 6,000 tpd.
Equipment
The mine utilizes a fleet of heavy equipment for its open-pit and underground operations, including haul trucks, dozers, excavators, graders, and loaders. For underground development, jumbo drills are used.
Expansion
B2Gold is evaluating an expansion of the mill throughput from 4,000 to 6,000 tonnes per day. The company is also conducting exploration drilling to target extensions of the Llama and Umwelt deposits. A study is underway to assess the installation of a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill to potentially increase throughput. The company is also considering a flotation/concentrate leach process to potentially increase gold recovery and reduce operating costs.
