Production overview - 2024: coal 2.979 Mt; 2023: coal 10.96 Mt.
Processing
The operation includes a coal handling and preparation plant.
Equipment
The mine is operated using dragline and truck/shovel fleets. Equipment includes Caterpillar 797f rear dump trucks. Contractors at the site have utilised equipment from Liebherr and Caterpillar.
Expansion
A "Peak Downs Mine Continuation project" is proposed to extend the mine's life by approximately 93 years through an expansion of the open-cut footprint. This project is currently in an active Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) phase with the Queensland Government. The proposed expansion aims to produce up to 18 million tonnes of product coal annually, with a stated investment of $2 billion. The project is expected to maintain the current workforce of 2,400 and create an additional 160 jobs during the construction phase. The Coordinator-General has set a lapse date for the project's declaration of 30 June 2026 for the EIS process.

Production
Specific production figures for the Broadmeadow mine are not publicly reported by BHP; they are aggregated into the total for BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) operations. For the financial year ended 30 June 2025, BMA's steelmaking coal production, excluding divested assets, saw a 5% increase. This was partly due to improved truck productivity which helped to offset the impacts of heavy wet weather and geotechnical challenges at the Broadmeadow mine. In an operational review for the nine months ended 31 March 2025, BHP stated that it was operating at slower mining rates at Broadmeadow to safely manage the geotechnical characteristics of the current longwall panel, and that this was expected to continue into the first quarter of the 2026 financial year. Due to these challenges and significant wet weather, production for BMA in FY2025 is no longer guided towards the upper half of its 33 to 38 million tonne range.
Processing
Coal from Broadmeadow is processed jointly with coal from the Goonyella Riverside open-cut operation. The coal is washed and blended at the adjacent Goonyella/Riverside open-cut mine to produce a premium coking coal product.
Equipment
The mine utilises a punch longwall mining method, accessing the coal seam from an existing open-cut pit highwall. In 2013, the mine transitioned to the top coal caving (TCC) method of extraction. The longwall is supplied by CAT and consists of 158 2-metre-wide shields. The main shields are two-leg with a 1460-tonne capacity, while gate end shields are three-leg with a 1580-tonne capacity, and the two shields covering the maingate drives are four-leg supports with an 1800-tonne capacity.
Expansion
The existing data regarding the extension of three longwall panels (14, 15, and 16) into the Red Hill mining lease remains the most current available information.

Overview
Greenbushes is an open-pit mine located in Western Australia, producing lithium, tantalum, and tin. It is operated by Talison Lithium Australia Pty Ltd. Talison Lithium is owned by a joint venture between Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia Pty Ltd (TLEA) (51%) and Albemarle Corporation (49%). IGO Limited has a 49% interest in TLEA, giving it a 24.99% indirect interest in Greenbushes, with Tianqi Lithium Corporation holding the remaining 51% of TLEA.
Production
Production overview - 2025: lithium 1350000 t; 2024: lithium 1480000 t.
Processing
The Greenbushes operation has four processing plants: one for technical grade lithium concentrate, two for chemical grade lithium concentrate, and a tailings retreatment plant. A third Chemical Grade Plant (CGP3) commenced commissioning with its first ore feed on 18 December 2025. The CGP3 project's total cost is estimated at approximately A$880M. CGP3 adds about 500,000 tonnes per year of spodumene concentrate capacity, increasing the total site capacity to around 2.1 million tonnes per year. CGP3 is expected to reach nameplate capacity in 2026. Further plant debottlenecking is planned to lift combined production during 2027, with total ore processed expected to increase to approximately 7 million tonnes per year by 2028.
Expansion
A significant expansion is underway to increase the production of lithium mineral concentrate. The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved amendments to the development envelope, increasing it from 2,207 hectares to 2,791 hectares. The expansion includes the construction of new waste rock landforms, the expansion of the Salt Water Gully Dam, and new water management infrastructure. A review is also underway to assess options for underground mining, with a new underground Mineral Resource Estimate of 132 million tonnes grading 1.5% Li₂O defined below the current open pit.
