Opened

Workforce
more than 250 permanent employees and regular contractors. During large maintenance shutdowns, there can be an additional 100-300 workers on site.
Overview
Orica Yarwun is a chemical manufacturing facility operated by Orica Limited in Yarwun, Queensland, Australia. The facility commenced operations in 1990, initially as a chlorine and sodium cyanide manufacturing complex. It has since expanded to become a world-scale sodium cyanide and ammonium nitrate operation. The primary function of Orica Yarwun is the manufacture of chemicals for the mining, infrastructure, agriculture and other industrial sectors. It is classified as a Major Hazard Facility (MHF).
Production
Ammonium Nitrate: The facility can produce over 500,000 tonnes per annum and up to 530,000 tonnes per annum of industrial-grade ammonium nitrate. An environmental authority permits a maximum production of 680,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per calendar year. Sodium Cyanide: The plant has the capacity to produce approximately 95,000 tonnes of sodium cyanide annually. The site's environmental authority allows for a maximum of 120,000 tonnes per calendar year. Nitric Acid: The facility can produce approximately 420,000 tonnes of nitric acid per annum. Ammonium Nitrate Emulsion: The site has the capacity to produce 170,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate emulsion annually.
Processing
Nitric Acid: Produced by reacting vaporised ammonia with compressed air in the presence of a precious metal catalyst to form nitrogen oxides, which are then combined with water. Ammonium Nitrate: Manufactured through the reaction of ammonia and nitric acid. The solid product, known as Nitropril®, is created by reacting nitric acid and vapourised ammonia in a pipe reactor to produce a solution, which is then prilled, dried, cooled, and coated. Sodium Cyanide: Manufactured using the Andrussow process, where natural gas (methane), ammonia, and pre-heated process air are reacted over a platinum catalyst to form hydrogen cyanide gas. This gas is then absorbed into a caustic soda solution to form liquid sodium cyanide, which can be further concentrated and solidified into briquettes.
Equipment
An Ammonium Nitrate Complex, which contains three Nitric Acid Plants, two Ammonium Nitrate Plants, and an Emulsion Phase Plant. A Chemicals Complex with one Sodium Cyanide Plant. An Expanded Polystyrene Plant. Two raw material import facilities at Fisherman's Landing, approximately 5-7 kilometres north of the main site, which include unloading and storage for ammonia and caustic soda. These raw materials are delivered to the Yarwun site through an underground pipe network. Product dispatch facilities. A facility control room. In 2024, two emissions abatement reactors were installed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Expansion
The facility has expanded to become a world-scale sodium cyanide and ammonium nitrate operation. In 2024, two emissions abatement reactors were installed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

conventional flowsheet. The run-of-mine ore is first crushed in a primary jaw crusher, then conveyed to a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill and a ball mill. The process includes flotation, where the concentrate is reground before undergoing cyanide leaching in agitated tanks. A carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is used to dissolve gold and silver, which are then adsorbed onto activated carbon. The precious metals are recovered from the loaded carbon by acid washing, stripping, and electrowinning to produce gold-silver doré bars.
Equipment
12 Cat 777F haul trucks, two front-end loaders, and one hydraulic front shovel
Expansion
received necessary permits for expansion, including a permit under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a Mine Operating Permit from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control in December 2022. These permits allow for the development of the underground mine and the expansion of the operating footprint for additional waste and tailings storage.
