Overview
Nitrogen manufacturing plant that produces anhydrous ammonia, granular urea, and coated urea.
Production
Over 1 million tonnes of nitrogen-based fertilisers and products annually. In 2023, the gross ammonia production capacity was 540,000 tonnes, with a net capacity of 120,000 tonnes, and the solid urea capacity was 525,000 tonnes. Opened
1988-01-01
Overview
An active, in-situ solution mining operation located near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, originally a conventional underground operation that converted to solution mining in 1988 after a water inflow.
Production
Annual nameplate capacity and current operational capability of 0.3 million tonnes of finished potash product. In 2023, the mine produced 0.2 million tonnes. Other recent years: 0.26 million tonnes (2022), 0.2 million tonnes (2020), and 0.3 million tonnes (2019).
Processing
Pumping heated water or brine through drillholes and injection wells into old underground mine workings to selectively leach sylvite (KCl). KCl-rich brine is brought to surface through recovery wells and directed into large evaporation ponds. Potash recrystallises and settles during cold winter months, then harvested using mechanical dredgers. Slurry sent to surface plant for processing. Remaining brine reheated and recirculated.

Mine life
76 years
Workforce
around 625 people
Overview
The Lanigan Potash operation is owned and operated by Nutrien Ltd. and is located 110 kilometres east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is a conventional underground potash mine, producing three grades of potash for use as fertiliser. Mining occurs at a depth of approximately 1,000 metres below ground.
Production
In 2024, the annual nameplate capacity for Lanigan was 3.8 million tonnes of finished potash products, with an annual operational capability of 3.0 million tonnes. For the three years prior to 2025, the average annual production was 2.916 million tonnes of finished potash products from an average of 8.631 million tonnes of ore mined and hoisted. From its opening in 1968 until the end of 2024, the mine has produced 76.014 million tonnes of finished potash from 255.996 million tonnes of hoisted ore.
Processing
The surface facilities include a mill where the ore is processed and concentrated to produce finished potash products (near-pure KCl). The processing involves crushing and milling. Solid mine tailings, consisting mainly of rock salt (NaCl) and some insolubles, are stored in an engineered Tailings Management Area. The operation also uses three brine disposal wells.
Equipment
The mine's fleet includes electrically powered borer miners, haulage systems, and continuous miners from manufacturers such as Prairie Machine, Komatsu (Joy), and Sandvik. The mine also utilises battery electric personnel carriers. Ore is transported from the mining face to the production shaft via continuous conveyor belts. The operation has implemented tele-remote technology, allowing mining machines to be operated from a remote location, which has enabled the mining of a production wing with no people present in the active area. This system uses a combination of radar, LIDAR, advanced sensing systems, and AI-powered technologies.
