Overview
The Cuajone mine, also known as Cuajone Operations, is a large open-pit mining operation located in the Moquegua region of southern Peru. It is owned and operated by Southern Copper Corporation, an indirect subsidiary of Grupo Mexico S.A.B. de C.V. The mine is situated in the District of Torata, Mariscal Nieto Province, approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Moquegua city and at an altitude of over 3,400 metres above sea level. It is a porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit and produces copper, molybdenum, and silver.
Production
Molybdenum production for the full year 2024 was 28,997 tonnes, an 8.1% increase from 2023. In 2024, copper production saw a 2.1% increase due to better ore grades and recoveries. The mine contributes around 200,000 tonnes of copper to Peruvian mining annually.
Processing
Ore processing at Cuajone involves a concentrator with a nominal processing rate of 90,000 tonnes per day and a heap leach facility. The process includes crushing, grinding, and flotation to produce a collective copper and molybdenum concentrate. The final copper concentrate is transported by rail to the Ilo smelter. In early 2024, a new quaternary crushing circuit using High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) technology began operating at full capacity.
Equipment
The mine utilises shovels with capacities of up to 80 tonnes and trucks with 240-tonne capacities. In January 2026, a modern electric cable shovel with a 109-tonne per bucket capacity was incorporated into the operations. All mining equipment movement is monitored and controlled through a truck dispatch system.
Expansion
There is a project under environmental assessment to optimise the mine and expand the concentrator's processing capacity to 108,000 tonnes per day.

Overview
The Chalchihuites project is an exploration-stage asset owned by Southern Copper Corporation. It is not an active mining operation. It is a skarn-type or contact deposit containing a complex mixture of oxides and sulphides. The principal commodities identified at Chalchihuites are silver, zinc, copper, and lead.
Processing
Metallurgical testing confirmed good recoveries for zinc, copper, lead, and silver in sulphide flotation, but issues remain with separating lead from the copper concentrate. Preliminary testing suggests a leaching-precipitating-flotation recovery process. Access infrastructure is being constructed for pilot plant metallurgical testing.
