PotassiumSalt
Opened
1968-01-01
Workforce
approximately 370 local jobs
Overview
The Ogden facility is a production-stage solar evaporation operation. It utilises a large complex of solar evaporation ponds to extract and separate minerals from the brine of the Great Salt Lake.
Production
Up to 320,000-325,000 short tons of SOP annually; approximately 1.5 million short tons of sodium chloride annually; 700,000-750,000 short tons of magnesium chloride annually. Plant Nutrition sales volumes were 273 thousand tons in fiscal year 2024.
Processing
Solar evaporation is the primary processing method. Mineral-rich brine is drawn from the Great Salt Lake and directed into a series of large, shallow evaporation ponds. Over a period of three years, the sun evaporates the water, leaving behind crystallized minerals. The process involves a 55,000-acre solar evaporation pond complex. After evaporation, precipitated minerals are harvested. SOP feedstock is crushed and mixed with brine to form a slurry, then agitated, cooled, crystallized, thickened, and filtered to produce schoenite. Schoenite is re-slurried with a different brine, heated, crystallized as SOP, filtered, and dried. The final product is compacted and screened into various grades.

Overview
The Cote Blanche Mine is an underground salt mine located on Cote Blanche Island in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, United States. The mine was originally operated by Carey Salt, with excavation beginning in 1961, and became part of the Compass Minerals family in 1990.
Production
The mine produces more than three million tons of rock salt annually and has a stated production capacity of 3,400,000 tons per year as of 2010.
Processing
The processing method involves hoisting the blasted salt to the surface where it is crushed, screened, and sorted to the required sizes. The salt is then loaded onto barges for shipment. The processing facilities, including milling and crushing, were constructed in 2001.
Equipment
The mining process at Cote Blanche involves the use of explosives to break the salt into smaller pieces. The broken salt is then handled by front-end loaders and haul trucks. A 1995 MSHA report mentioned the use of 35-ton haul trucks and a Caterpillar 988-B front-end loader. The mine is equipped with vertical shaft lift systems, milling and crushing facilities, maintenance shops, and raw material handling systems. The infrastructure also includes a barge loading dock.
