The River View mining complex comprises two mines: River View (Mine #1) and the new Henderson County (Mine #2). River View is the largest underground room-and-pillar mine of its kind in North America, producing medium/high-sulfur coal from the WKY9 and WKY11 seams.

In September 2022, an expansion of the River View mine into Henderson County was announced, with a $35 million investment to construct a new 30,000-square-foot facility. This expansion, known as the Henderson County Mine (or River View Mine #2), is expected to create 260 new jobs. Construction was planned to begin in April 2023 and be completed by December 2024.

Production ceased in January 2026, with the mine set for permanent closure and layoffs to take effect from 1 April 2026. The closure was prompted by a key customer's inability to commit to purchasing the minimum one million tons per year required for the mine to remain viable. On 29 January 2026, Alliance Resource Partners, L.P. announced it had issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notices to all 199-200 employees at the Mountain View Mine.

A "Peak Downs Mine Continuation project" is proposed to extend the mine's life by approximately 93 years through an expansion of the open-cut footprint. This project is currently in an active Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) phase with the Queensland Government. The proposed expansion aims to produce up to 18 million tonnes of product coal annually, with a stated investment of $2 billion. The project is expected to maintain the current workforce of 2,400 and create an additional 160 jobs during the construction phase. The Coordinator-General has set a lapse date for the project's declaration of 30 June 2026 for the EIS process.

Specific production figures for the Broadmeadow mine are not publicly reported by BHP; they are aggregated into the total for BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) operations. For the financial year ended 30 June 2025, BMA's steelmaking coal production, excluding divested assets, saw a 5% increase. This was partly due to improved truck productivity which helped to offset the impacts of heavy wet weather and geotechnical challenges at the Broadmeadow mine. In an operational review for the nine months ended 31 March 2025, BHP stated that it was operating at slower mining rates at Broadmeadow to safely manage the geotechnical characteristics of the current longwall panel, and that this was expected to continue into the first quarter of the 2026 financial year. Due to these challenges and significant wet weather, production for BMA in FY2025 is no longer guided towards the upper half of its 33 to 38 million tonne range.

Coal from Broadmeadow is processed jointly with coal from the Goonyella Riverside open-cut operation. The coal is washed and blended at the adjacent Goonyella/Riverside open-cut mine to produce a premium coking coal product.

The mine utilises a punch longwall mining method, accessing the coal seam from an existing open-cut pit highwall. In 2013, the mine transitioned to the top coal caving (TCC) method of extraction. The longwall is supplied by CAT and consists of 158 2-metre-wide shields. The main shields are two-leg with a 1460-tonne capacity, while gate end shields are three-leg with a 1580-tonne capacity, and the two shields covering the maingate drives are four-leg supports with an 1800-tonne capacity.

The existing data regarding the extension of three longwall panels (14, 15, and 16) into the Red Hill mining lease remains the most current available information.

The Goonyella Riverside mine is located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 30 kilometres north of Moranbah. It is part of the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), a 50:50 joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Development.

The processing involves crushing the coal to a 6-inch minus size before it is loaded into a silo. The coal is then transported from a loadout facility to the power station via a privately owned railway.

The mine utilises two Bucyrus Erie 2570-W draglines for removing overburden. The exposed coal is then handled by 993 loaders and Triple 7 coal haulers. The equipment fleet also includes four Cat D10T and one Cat D9T dozers for spoil levelling, dragline pad preparation, road construction, drainage ditches, cleaning coal, and ripping overburden.

In January 2025, the Government of Saskatchewan announced it was considering extending the life of the Poplar River Generating Station, which would in turn extend the life of the mine.

Active coal mining ceased in 2021, and the mine has moved into reclamation mode. Prairie Mines & Royalty ULC (PMRU) has submitted applications for the closure, decommissioning, and reclamation of the mine. Reclamation is anticipated to be finished by 2026.

A 59-megawatt solar farm and a 34-megawatt battery energy storage system, known as the Mannix Mine Solar & Battery Energy Storage System Project, has been proposed for the reclaimed mine site. The Alberta Utilities Commission approved the applications to construct and operate the project in April 2025. Construction is estimated to start in the third quarter of 2025, with commercial operation planned for the third quarter of 2026. The BIOSALIX project, a clean technology demonstration, is using municipal organic waste from Edmonton to replenish soil at the mine site to grow willow that can be used as a biomass feedstock for renewable energy.

Surface coal mining operations at the Genesee Mine concluded in December 2023. The site has now transitioned to focus on reclamation, final decommissioning, and closure activities. A portion of the site will remain active for the extraction of fly ash. The cessation of mining operations coincided with the conversion of the associated Genesee Generating Station to natural gas, which was completed in June 2024. Subbituminous coal production in Alberta effectively ended with the decommissioning of the Genesee mine in June 2024. Reclamation activities are underway, with a final Decommissioning and Land Reclamation Plan to be submitted to the Alberta Energy Regulator. The objectives of the reclamation are to protect the watershed, re-establish agricultural lands, and create wildlife habitat.

The Coal Valley Mine is a surface mine located in West Central Alberta, south of the Town of Edson. Mining is conducted using truck and shovel/loader and dragline methods. The mine was placed on care and maintenance in June 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restarted production in the fourth quarter of 2021.

In August 2025, the U.S. Department of the Interior approved a mining plan modification for the Rosebud Mine, located in Rosebud and Treasure counties. This decision allows for the extraction of approximately 33.75 million tons of federal coal and extends the mine's operation. The expansion covers nearly 1,900 acres of new mining area. The mine has several active permit areas, including Area A, Area B, Area C, and Area F. As of December 2023, 582 acres had been disturbed in the Area F project area, with 8.5 million tons of coal produced from this area. An application for a fifth amendment (AM5) to the operating permit for Area B would increase the permit area by 9,108 acres to a total of 15,153 acres and allow for the extraction of an additional 42.9 million tons of coal.
