Overview
The Broadmeadow mine, located in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia, is an operating underground metallurgical coal mine. It is owned by the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), a 50:50 joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Development. The mine is approximately 34 kilometres north of Moranbah.
Production
The mine has a production capacity of up to 4.8 million tonnes per year. Steelmaking coal production in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 rose by 8%, partly due to strong mining rates. Improved mining rates were reported in the third quarter of FY2025, despite challenges from wet weather and geotechnical issues in fiscal year 2025.
Processing
Coal from Broadmeadow is not processed on-site but is handled jointly with production from the Goonyella Riverside operation. It is washed, sorted, and blended at Goonyella's two coal processing plants before being transported by rail to the BMA-owned Hay Point Coal Terminal for export.
Equipment
The mine uses a longwall shearer and a conveyor belt system to transport coal to the surface.
Expansion
An expansion of the mine was approved, involving the extension of three longwall panels (14, 15, and 16) into the adjacent Red Hill mining lease. This project is intended to extend the mine's operational life.
