Mt Arthur Coal is a large open-cut thermal coal mine situated in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia, approximately 5 kilometres south-west of Muswellbrook. Owned and operated by Hunter Valley Energy Coal Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BHP, it is the largest coal mine in New South Wales. The mine produces thermal coal for international customers in the energy sector. Production at the current Mt Arthur Coal operation commenced in 2002.

Post-closure plans include exploring a pumped hydro energy storage project with ACCIONA Energía and a A$30 million community fund. A A$1.9 billion contract extension with Thiess was secured in 2024 for mining services.

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is proposing the Saraji East Mining Lease Project, a greenfield single-seam underground mine development that will be accessed through the existing Saraji open cut highwall. This project is expected to produce up to 8 million tonnes per year of metallurgical product coal over a 20-year life. The project would involve the extraction of up to 11 million tonnes per year of run-of-mine coal. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) assessment report for this project was issued to the proponent on 24 November 2025. In November 2025, BMA placed the Saraji South operation into a period of care and maintenance due to market conditions and the impact of Queensland's coal royalties.

BHP's operational reviews for the 2025 financial year noted that steelmaking coal production was impacted by heavy wet weather and geotechnical challenges at the Broadmeadow underground mine. Despite these challenges, improved mining rates at Broadmeadow were reported in the third quarter of FY2025. For the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, steelmaking coal production rose by 8%, supported by strong mining rates at Broadmeadow.

Coal from Broadmeadow is processed jointly with coal from the Goonyella Riverside open cut operation. The Goonyella Riverside Mine has two coal processing plants where mined coal is sorted, washed, and blended to match demand specifications. After processing, the coal is transported by rail to the BMA-owned Hay Point Terminal.

An extension to the Broadmeadow mine was approved in 2011.

Some coal seams are of sufficient quality to only require crushing, which is handled by an internal bypass system.

The mining equipment includes large trucks, shovels, excavators, dozers, graders, drills, and water carts. A multi-bench multi-strip shovel and excavator operation is utilised.

In June 2022, BHP announced it would seek approvals to continue mining at Mt Arthur Coal beyond its current consent, which expires in 2026, and proceed with a managed process to cease mining by the end of the 2030 financial year. A modification to the project approval was sought to allow for this four-year extension. This modification includes a reduction in the cumulative open cut and underground ROM coal handling rate from 36 Mtpa to 29 Mtpa, and a reduction in maximum total coal rail transportation from 27 Mtpa to 20 Mtpa. There will be an overall reduction of 387 hectares in the approved disturbance area.

In June 2022, BHP announced its decision to cease mining at Mt Arthur Coal by the end of the 2030 financial year, after an attempt to sell the asset was unsuccessful. The New South Wales Government has granted approval for mining activities to continue until June 2030, extending the previous 2026 closure date. BHP is partnering with ACCIONA Energía to study the feasibility of developing a pumped hydro energy storage project at the site post-closure. Conceptual studies for the pumped hydro project suggest it could create around 1,000 jobs during construction. In November 2025, BHP announced the transfer of around 3,700 hectares of land from the Mt Arthur Coal site to the neighbouring Malabar Resources. This will allow Mt Arthur to use an existing mine void at Malabar's Maxwell Underground site for tailings storage.

The operator is Ohio County Coal Resources, Inc., a subsidiary of American Consolidated Natural Resources, Inc. The mine complex includes the Golden Ridge Portal, the Whitaker Portal, and the Ohio County Preparation Plant. The mine extracts thermal coal from the Pittsburgh #8 coal seam using longwall and continuous miner sections.
