Overview
Roper Creek is a Bowen Basin coal project/JV interest in the Middlemount district of central Queensland. Roper Creek is a mineral development licence associated with earlier Roper Creek exploration permits, while Middlemount Coal documentation places MDL 3028 and Roper Creek within the broader Middlemount mining locality. The asset is a project rather than as a producing stand-alone mine. Anglo American’s current Australian steelmaking coal sale package includes an 86.36% interest in the Roper Creek joint venture, with Dhilmar announced as buyer subject to approvals and completion.

Overview
Theodore South is a Queensland Bowen Basin coal project/JV interest associated with the Dawson-Moura coalfield south of Theodore. Older Queensland coal references describe Dawson, formerly Theodore South, as a coal deposit about 25 kilometres south of Theodore and 170 kilometres southwest of Gladstone, with Baralaba Coal Measures geology and both open-cut and underground development potential. The asset is not a stand-alone producing mine record in current public material. It is best entered as a non-producing joint venture / coal project interest within Anglo American’s Australian steelmaking coal portfolio, with Dhilmar announced as buyer subject to transaction completion. Mitsui-related interests are historically associated with the Theodore/Dawson South tenements, but confirm current JV party before final database lock. Queensland Government data for EPC 793 lists Anglo Coal (Dawson South) Pty Ltd at 51% and Mitsui Moura Investment Pty Limited at 49%
Production
Non-producing project / JV interest as a stand-alone record. Anglo’s current sale package lists Theodore South as a joint venture interest rather than a producing mine.

Overview
The Winchester South Project is an open pit coal mine in Queensland, Australia, currently in the permitting stage. The Queensland Government's Coordinator-General recommended the project proceed in November 2023, and the Draft Environmental Authority was approved in February 2024, though it faces a legal challenge. Construction is expected to start in 2026.
Production
The mine will produce up to 17 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of run-of-mine (ROM) coal. This will result in approximately 11 Mtpa of product coal. The product mix over the mine life is expected to be 20% hard coking coal, 37% semi-soft coking coal and 44% thermal coal.
Processing
The project will involve the construction of a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP), a train load-out facility and a rail loop to connect with the existing Bowen Basin coal rail network.

Expansion
Whitehaven Coal has lodged an application for the Maules Creek Continuation Project. This project seeks to extend the life of the mine to 2044, representing a 10-year extension beyond the currently approved mine life. The project also proposes a modest increase to the production limit from 13 Mtpa to 14 Mtpa of ROM coal. The continuation would occur entirely within existing mining tenements. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project was lodged with the NSW Government in June 2025. The project also includes the construction of a water pipeline to connect with the approved Tarrawonga to Vickery pipeline network to improve water sharing efficiency.

Overview
The mine is currently under monitoring and maintenance following the completion of final rehabilitation works. Final rehabilitation works were carried out between 2019 and 2023. The site is now in a monitoring and maintenance period. The rehabilitated site aims to establish woodland vegetation that blends into the surrounding Vickery State Forest, with some areas designated for potential grazing. Whitehaven Coal will continue to monitor and maintain the site until it is deemed safe, stable, and self-sustaining. This monitoring period is expected to last at least 15 years.
Production
Production overview - 2019: coal 388989 t; 2018: coal 856818 t.
Processing
The run-of-mine coal was crushed and screened at the mine site. It was then transported by road to the Whitehaven Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) for further processing before being dispatched to customers. Reject material from the CHPP was sometimes returned to the Rocglen pit for disposal.
Equipment

Production
The mine produces high-quality thermal coal and semi-soft coking coal (also marketed as PCI coal) for export markets. The operation is approved to produce up to 3.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of ROM coal. For the financial year ending 30 June 2023, the combined ROM production for the Gunnedah open cuts (Tarrawonga and Werris Creek) was 3.4 million tonnes, with saleable coal production of 3.3 million tonnes. For the quarter ending 30 September 2023, Tarrawonga's ROM coal production was 457,000 tonnes and saleable coal production was 364,000 tonnes. For the quarter ending 31 March 2024, Tarrawonga's ROM production was 512,000 tonnes and saleable production was 560,000 tonnes.
Processing
The mine uses conventional open-cut truck and excavator methods. Run-of-mine (ROM) coal is crushed and screened on-site before being transported by road approximately 40 kilometres to the Gunnedah Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP). At the CHPP, the coal undergoes selective washing and blending to meet customer specifications before being loaded onto trains for transport to the Port of Newcastle.
Equipment
The mining fleet includes excavators (such as O&K RH170 and Hitachi EX1900 models) and haul trucks. The haulage contractor uses a specialised fleet of Scania R620 prime movers towing A-double trailer combinations for transport to the CHPP.
Expansion
Whitehaven Coal took full ownership of the mine in April 2018 after acquiring Idemitsu's 30% interest. A new mining fleet was introduced from financial year 2020 to support the approved expansion to 3.5 Mtpa ROM coal. A water pipeline is planned to connect the Tarrawonga and Vickery mines to provide additional water security.
