Overview
The Moa Joint Venture is a vertically integrated nickel and cobalt mining and processing operation located in the Holguin province of Cuba. The project is an equal 50/50 partnership between the Canadian mining company Sherritt International Corporation and the General Nickel Company S.A. (GNC) of Cuba.
Production
For the full year of 2025, the Moa JV's finished nickel production was 25,240 tonnes and finished cobalt production was 2,729 tonnes (100% basis).
Processing
hydrometallurgical, specifically a high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) process to produce mixed sulphides containing nickel and cobalt. This intermediate product is then shipped to Sherritt's refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, for final processing into high-purity nickel and cobalt. The Moa facility includes a slurry preparation plant and a third acid plant, which was commissioned in 2016.
Equipment
hydraulic excavators and articulated haul trucks. The processing plant is equipped with crushers, a slurry preparation plant, and leaching and precipitation circuits.
Expansion

Overview
The Forrestania Nickel Operation, located approximately 400 kilometres east of Perth in Western Australia, was a significant nickel producing asset for IGO Limited. The operation, now sold and in care and maintenance, comprised two underground mines, Flying Fox and Spotted Quoll, and a central processing facility, the Cosmic Boy Concentrator.
Production
Production overview - 2023: nickel 11931 t; 2022: nickel 14028 t.
Processing
The ore from both the Flying Fox and Spotted Quoll underground mines was treated at the Cosmic Boy Concentrator. The processing method involved conventional flotation to produce nickel concentrate. The plant's infrastructure includes primary crushing, conveying, coarse ore storage, and a Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill incorporating flash flotation. The concentrate dewatering process utilizes thickening and filtration. A Mill Recovery Enhancement Project (MREP) for Nickel Bio-Leach, which included the addition of eight 230,000-litre leach tanks and seven chemical tanks, was completed in 2018.
Equipment
The underground mining method employed at Forrestania was longhole open stoping. At the Spotted Quoll mine, specialised small-scale mechanised development and production were carried out using a fleet that included Atlas Copco T1D & H104 drills and four Caterpillar R1300G tele-remote loaders.
