Overview
The Chichester Hub is an integrated iron ore operation owned by Fortescue in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It comprises the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek open pit mines, with Christmas Creek located approximately 50 kilometres east of Cloudbreak. The hub has an annual production capacity of approximately 100 million tonnes.
Production
The Chichester Hub has an annual production capacity of approximately 100 Mt. As of June 2020, proved and probable ore reserves were estimated at 1.4 billion tonnes.
Processing
Ore from Christmas Creek is transported to Cloudbreak for blending and processing, which includes crushing, screening, scrubbing, and desanding. A Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) plant at Christmas Creek recovers an additional 10% of ore. The blended ore is then transported by railway to Port Hedland for export.
Equipment
The Chichester Hub uses conventional open pit methods, including truck and shovel, surface miners, and strip mining. The haul truck fleet was converted to an autonomous haulage system by October 2020. Liebherr R 9400 E electric excavators began operating at Cloudbreak in December 2023.
Expansion
Fortescue is implementing decarbonisation projects, including a 60MW solar farm for daytime operations and an additional 190MW solar farm under construction at Cloudbreak. Christmas Creek is also home to Fortescue's Green Energy Hub, which focuses on green hydrogen and green iron initiatives.

Overview
The Jimblebar mine is a large-scale, open-cut iron ore mine located 41 kilometres east of Newman in the Pilbara region. It is operated by BHP as part of its Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) integrated system of mines, rail, and port facilities. The operation includes the Wheelarra Hill, Hashimoto, and South Jimblebar deposits. A significant expansion, the Jimblebar Hub Combined Proposal, which seeks to merge the Jimblebar, Orebody 18, and Orebody 31 operations, has been recommended for environmental approval as of October 2025. This proposal includes developing deposits below the water table and constructing a new beneficiation plant. The proposed expansion has a project life of up to 46 years.
Production
Production overview - 2023: iron ore 66801 kt; 2021: iron ore 67 Mt.
Processing
The mine employs conventional open-cut mining methods. Ore is processed through three primary crushers and a central Ore Handling Plant (OHP) that produces both lump and fines products. The processed ore is transported via an overland conveyor and the Mount Newman railway line to port facilities at Port Hedland. A Jimblebar Beneficiation Project, which includes a deslime plant, is planned for construction and commissioning from the third quarter of 2025 to the third quarter of 2027.
Equipment
Jimblebar is home to BHP's first fully autonomous haul truck fleet. In November 2025, two Caterpillar battery-electric haul trucks arrived at the mine for on-site testing. The iron ore trains used for transport are over 2.5 kilometres long.
Expansion
A significant expansion, the Jimblebar Hub Combined Proposal, which seeks to merge the Jimblebar, Orebody 18, and Orebody 31 operations, has been recommended for environmental approval as of October 2025. This proposal includes developing deposits below the water table and constructing a new beneficiation plant. The proposed expansion has a project life of up to 46 years. In October 2025, the WA Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended the approval of the Jimblebar Hub expansion. The proposal covers a 24,684-hectare development envelope. In October 2024, NRW Civil & Mining was awarded a contract valued at around $109 million for development works to support sustainable production, with work expected to commence in November 2024 and finish in the second quarter of 2026.

Mount Whaleback (Newman)

Western Australia, Australia · Open Pit

Operating
Iron Ore
Opened
1968-01-01
Workforce
BHP's WAIO operations employed or contracted around 23,000 people in 2023. A 2022 report noted that WAIO employed 28.8% females, up from 25.4% in FY21. In FY2021, 10.5% of the workforce was Indigenous.
Overview
The Mount Whaleback mine, also known as the Newman West operation, is one of the world's largest single-pit, open-cut iron ore mines. Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately six kilometres west of Newman, it measures over five kilometres in length and 1.5 kilometres in width. The mine is operated by BHP as part of a joint venture with Mitsui & Co. and ITOCHU Corporation, holding 85 percent, 10 percent, and 5 percent stakes respectively. Operations commenced in 1968, with the nearby town of Newman constructed to support the mine. The pit is planned to eventually reach a depth of 0.5 kilometres.
Production
BHP's Newman Operations, which include Mount Whaleback (Newman West) and Newman East, have a total iron ore production of approximately 78 million tonnes annually.
Processing
Ore from the mine is processed at the Newman processing hub, which includes crushing and screening facilities. Lower grade ore undergoes beneficiation. The processed ore is then transported via a more than 1,000-kilometre rail network to port facilities at Port Hedland for export.
Equipment
A fleet of haul trucks, including Caterpillar 793 models, is used at the site.
Expansion
As part of the broader Newman operations, there is a focus on replacing production from depleting orebodies, with the Western Ridge Crusher project expected to contribute an average of 25 million tonnes per annum for about 12 years.

Workforce
The mine has more than 600 ongoing operational roles. The operational workforce includes 40 per cent female and 15 per cent Indigenous staff. The project created around 9,000 direct and indirect jobs during its construction phase.
Overview
South Flank is a major iron ore mine located on the traditional lands of the Banjima people, 156 kilometres north-west of Newman. It is Australia's largest new iron ore mine in more than 50 years. The mine was developed to replace the 80 Mtpa Yandi mine, which was nearing the end of its economic life. The project had a capital expenditure of US$3.6 billion. Together with Mining Area C, it forms one of the largest operating iron ore hubs in the world, known as the Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) hub, with a combined production capacity of 145 million tonnes per year. The development of South Flank was designed to increase WAIO's average iron ore grade from 61 per cent to 62 per cent.
Production
Production overview - 2025: iron ore 80000000 t; 2024: iron ore 80 Mt.
Processing
The project includes an 80 million tonnes per annum crushing and screening plant, an overland conveyor system, and stockyard and train loading facilities. The ore is transported on trains that are over 2.5km long to Port Hedland.
Equipment
The mine integrates advances in autonomous-ready fleets, digital connectivity and modular design.
Expansion
Developed to replace the Yandi mine and increase the average iron ore grade of the Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) hub.
