Overview
Located north of Hibbing, Minnesota, in the Mesabi Iron Range, this active open-pit mine produces iron ore pellets (magnetite concentrate). It is a joint venture with U.S. Steel holding 14.7% and Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. 85.3% (managing partner). Operations are sometimes idled due to market conditions.
Production
Rated annual capacity: 9.1 million tons of iron ore pellets (U.S. Steel's share: 1.3 million tons). 2020 production: 7.8 million tons of pellets, 29 million tons of ore mined annually. 2022 production: 5 million long tons of pellets.
Processing
Single stage of crushing and a single stage of autogenous grinding. The on-site concentrator uses autogenous (AG) mills and magnetic separation to produce magnetite concentrate, which is then sent to an on-site pellet plant.
Equipment
Primary mining equipment includes large drills, diesel hydraulic and electric shovels, and off-road dump trucks. Concentrator equipment includes Allis Chalmers gyratory crushers, autogenous grinding and magnetic separation lines. Pellet plant equipment includes balling drums, roll screen, and shredder.
Expansion
In May 2023, Cleveland-Cliffs was awarded new state mineral leases at the former Butler Taconite mine site, which are expected to provide more than two decades of additional ore reserves for Hibbing Taconite.
