Port Playford

South Australia, Australia · Processing Facility

Under Development
Iron Ore
Workforce
estimated to create over 100 jobs during the construction phase and 80 permanent positions for ongoing port operations.
Overview
Port Playford is not a mine but a bulk commodity export terminal project. It is being developed on the 1068-hectare site of the former Northern and Playford A and B power stations, south of Port Augusta. It received development approval from the South Australian government in January 2021.
Production
The anticipated initial export capacity for the port is up to 15 million tonnes per annum. There is scope to potentially increase this to 50 million tonnes annually.
Processing
Port Playford is designed as a transhipment port. Ore will be received by rail, unloaded at an enclosed facility, and then transported via enclosed conveyors to be stored in stockpile sheds. From the stockpiles, it will be conveyed to the wharf and loaded onto barges for transfer to larger vessels in the Spencer Gulf.
Equipment
existing infrastructure, including a 5-kilometre rail loop and unloading facilities previously used for coal. The development plan includes upgrading existing facilities and constructing new infrastructure. This involves an iron ore-offloading facility at the rail line, enclosed conveyor systems to transfer ore to stockpile sheds, and from the sheds to the wharf. The plans also detail ore stockpile sheds, a wharf area with a crane platform and a transhipment loader. The port will use shallow-draft, self-unloading vessels or barges to move commodities from the wharf to larger Cape-sized, ocean-going bulk carriers moored at offshore trans-shipment points near Whyalla.
Expansion
scope to potentially increase this to 50 million tonnes annually.
