As of May 2025, the project employed over 1,800 people. Accommodation is provided at the 500-room Mungala Resort at Ken's Bore, offering rooms three times the size of traditional fly-in, fly-out accommodation.
Overview
The Onslow Iron project is an operating open-pit iron ore mine located approximately 150 kilometres east of Onslow in the West Pilbara region of Western Australia. Operated by Mineral Resources (MinRes) on behalf of the Red Hill Iron Joint Venture, which includes Baowu, AMCI, and POSCO, the project unlocks previously stranded iron ore deposits such as Ken's Bore, Upper Cane, and Cardo Bore East. MinRes holds a 57% ownership share and 100% of the project's infrastructure.
Production
First ore was shipped in May 2024. The project was expected to reach its nameplate capacity of 35 million tonnes per annum by June 2025. For the 2025 fiscal year, 14 million tonnes were shipped. In the first half of the 2025-2026 financial year, a yearly production rate of 35 million tonnes was maintained.
Processing
The project employs an innovative dust-free pit-to-ship supply chain. Mining involves conventional drill and blast, followed by crushing in three NextGen modular plants. Ore is then transported 150 kilometres by autonomous road trains from Ken's Bore to the Port of Ashburton. At the port, ore is stored in a 220,000-tonne capacity shed before being loaded onto shallow-draft transhippers, which transport it 40 kilometres offshore to larger ocean-going vessels.
Equipment
The project utilises three in-house designed NextGen modular crushing plants. Ore is transported by a fleet of 120 autonomous 320-tonne jumbo road trains. A fleet of 20,000-tonne capacity shallow-draft transhippers move ore 40 kilometres offshore to larger ocean-going vessels.
Expansion
In March 2025, Mineral Resources increased by 89% to 744 million tonnes at 56.3% Fe, and Ore Reserves increased by 73% to 359 million tonnes at 57.5% Fe. The mine plan includes developing Cardo Bore East and Upper Cane deposits, connecting them to the Ken's Bore crushing area. Wet processing is planned from the 2028-2029 financial year. The transhipping fleet is expanding, with a fifth vessel arriving in May 2025 and a sixth and seventh expected in 2026.

Iron Ore
Overview
The South West Creek Project is a pit-to-port iron ore infrastructure solution in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, operated by Mineral Resources Limited (MinRes). The project's primary focus is the development of a new iron ore export facility at Stanley Point Berth 3 in South West Creek, within the Port of Port Hedland. This development is part of a Port and Rail agreement between MinRes, Hancock Prospecting Pty Limited, and Roy Hill Holdings Pty Limited. Under this agreement, the parties will jointly investigate and develop the new facility, with Roy Hill providing rail haulage and port services. The joint venture between MinRes and Hancock was granted a port capacity allocation for the development of the berth by the Western Australian Government. The project is intended to unlock stranded iron ore assets in the Pilbara, such as the Marillana and Ophthalmia projects, which form the basis of the South West Creek Hub. Mineral Resources has the right to earn a 50% interest in these projects from Brockman Mining Limited. The South West Creek Project could provide an additional 20 million tonnes of annual export capacity for Mineral Resources. The development is subject to further approvals, necessary agreements, and a positive final investment decision from the joint venture partners. As of early 2022, the partners were progressing with a feasibility study and the finalisation of approvals.
Production
The project is expected to provide an additional 20 million tonnes of annual export capacity for Mineral Resources.
Expansion
Investigating the development of a new iron ore export facility at the Port of Port Hedland in partnership with Hancock Prospecting and Roy Hill.

Overview
Mineral Resources announced the closure of the Yilgarn Hub in June 2024 due to financial non-viability, ceasing iron ore shipments by December 2024. Operations transitioned to care and maintenance in early 2025, and the mine was sold to Yilgarn Iron Investments Pty Ltd (YII) on 30 June 2025.
Production
Production overview - 2024: iron ore 7.6 Mt; 2022: iron ore 8.7 Mt.
Processing
In the 2023 financial year, production at the Yilgarn Hub was converted to process both lump and fines.
Equipment
The assets included five digger fleets, 28 trucks, and 25 pieces of ancillary gear, which were to be redeployed across Mineral Resources' other businesses prior to the sale.
Expansion
Prior to the closure announcement, Mineral Resources was exploring the transformation of the Yilgarn Hub from a hematite to a magnetite operation. Exploration drilling and environmental studies for hematite and magnetite targets were planned to continue into the 2025 calendar year.

Overview
The Marillana Project is a 50:50 joint venture between Brockman Mining Limited and Mineral Resources (MinRes) in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. MinRes manages the joint venture and will oversee the mine's development and operation. The project is approximately 100 kilometres north-west of Newman and is currently in the development and feasibility stage, pending a final investment decision. This decision is contingent on securing essential port and rail infrastructure at Port Hedland, which is being progressed by a joint venture between MinRes and Hancock Prospecting.

Processing
The Marillana Project is an open-pit mine targeting hematite detrital and channel iron deposit mineralisation. Processing will involve simple beneficiation to upgrade lower-grade detrital ore. Metallurgical testing indicates that ore with an in-situ grade of 42.2% iron can be processed into a high-quality iron ore fines product with a grade over 60% Fe, a sinter feed product of 60.5% to 61.5% Fe, and a direct-ship-ore product grading 55.5% Fe. Mineral Resources will build, own, and operate the necessary crushing and beneficiation plants.
