Workforce
The mine's workforce included over 2,000 employees and contractors as of November 2025, with a significant portion sourced from local communities.
Overview
The Platreef PGM-Nickel Mine, also known as the Platreef Project, is an underground operation located in Limpopo Province, South Africa, approximately 280 kilometres northeast of Johannesburg and near Mokopane. It commenced production on 18 November 2025 and is currently in a ramp-up phase. The mine is owned by Ivanplats, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, with other stakeholders including South African B-BBEE partners and a Japanese consortium. Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. and Sandstorm Gold Royalties are involved through financing agreements.
Production
Production is being developed in three phases. Phase 1, which started in late 2025, involves a concentrator with a milling capacity of 770,000 tonnes per annum. This phase is expected to produce approximately 100,000 ounces of platinum, palladium, rhodium, and gold (3PE+Au), plus nickel and copper by-products, once fully ramped up.
Processing
Processing involves a concentrator plant that uses crushing, milling, and flotation to produce a polymetallic concentrate. The first sale of concentrate was made to Northam Platinum in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Equipment
Key equipment includes a series of vertical shafts for access and hoisting. Shaft 1 is operational. Shaft 3 construction was completed in late March 2026 and, once commissioned by April 2026, will increase the mine's hoisting capacity five-fold to 5 million tonnes per annum. Shaft 2 is being widened to a 10-metre diameter and is set to become the largest hoisting shaft in Africa, supporting future expansions.
Expansion
The Phase 2 expansion is underway, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027. This will add a new 3.3 million tonne-per-annum concentrator module, increasing total processing capacity to 4.1 million tonnes per annum. Phase 2 is expected to increase average annual production to approximately 450,000-460,000 ounces of 3PE+Au, plus over 30 million pounds (approximately 9,000 tonnes) of nickel and 6,000 tonnes of copper. A future Phase 3 expansion, outlined in a Preliminary Economic Assessment, is being considered. This would further increase processing capacity to 10.7 million tonnes per annum and more than double annual production to over 1 million ounces of 3PE+Au, along with approximately 22,000 tonnes of nickel and 13,000 tonnes of copper.

Workforce
The mine employs a diverse, multinational workforce. The Saudi workforce is over 20%, and there is a focus on increasing this number and hiring more female employees.
Overview
The Jabal Sayid mine is an underground copper operation located approximately 350 kilometres north-east of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. It is a 50/50 joint venture between the Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma'aden) and Barrick Gold Corporation, operated by the Ma'aden Barrick Copper Company (MBCC). The first shipment of copper concentrate was in December 2015, with commercial production starting in July 2016. The mine switched from diesel generators to grid power in 2025.
Production
Production overview - 2025: copper 64000 t; 2024: copper 65000 t.
Processing
The processing plant uses conventional flotation to produce copper concentrate, with a treatment rate of approximately 3 million tonnes of ore per year. A paste backfill system was commissioned in October 2017. As part of recent upgrades, a direct flow reactor and a reagent plant were completed.
Equipment
The underground mining contractor, Byrnecut, has a contract running to 2028. Their fleet is composed of Sandvik machines, including nine TH663i and three TH663 trucks, seven LH621i and one LH621 LHDs, four DL421 production drills, and three DD421 development rigs. A Rhino 100HM boxhole borer is also in use. An underground workshop supports minor repairs and daily services. The operation also uses the RCT system for remote surface loader activities and the LiveMine system for data recording.
Expansion
An expansion involved the development of the Lode 1 orebody, located less than a kilometre from the existing lode. Stoping at Lode 1 commenced in the third quarter of 2023, and the extension development, including extensive underground capital works, was completed in 2024. This work included major upgrades to ventilation and paste plant facilities, with the paste plant commissioning starting in the second quarter of 2024. In January 2023, Ma'aden and Barrick signed new joint venture agreements to explore the nearby Jabal Sayid South and Umm Ad Damar license areas. Exploration has identified prospective corridors, with the focus for 2025 being untested potential at depth.
