conventional flowsheet. The run-of-mine ore is first crushed in a primary jaw crusher, then conveyed to a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill and a ball mill. The process includes flotation, where the concentrate is reground before undergoing cyanide leaching in agitated tanks. A carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is used to dissolve gold and silver, which are then adsorbed onto activated carbon. The precious metals are recovered from the loaded carbon by acid washing, stripping, and electrowinning to produce gold-silver doré bars.

Production overview - 2023: gold 49300 oz.
Processing
The processing method at Waihi involves several stages. Ore is first crushed and then ground in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill with water and steel balls to form a slurry. Lime and a weak sodium cyanide solution are added to the slurry in leach tanks to dissolve the gold and silver. The slurry then passes through adsorption tanks containing carbon granules, which attract the dissolved gold and silver. The metals are then stripped from the carbon, and through a process of electrowinning, a gold and silver-bearing sludge is produced. This sludge is dried, mixed with fluxes, and smelted in a furnace at 1200 degrees Celsius to form doré bullion bars. These bars, which are approximately 99% pure gold and silver, are then sent to a refinery in Perth, Australia, for final separation.
Expansion
OceanaGold has received permit approval for the Waihi North Project, a significant expansion of the Waihi Operation. This project includes the development of the new high-grade Wharekirauponga Underground (WUG) mine, located about 10 kilometres north of the existing operations. The approval also allows for the expansion of the current processing and water treatment facilities and the construction of a new tailings storage facility. The development of the Waihi North Project is expected to extend the mine life of the Waihi Operation to at least 2038. The existing Martha Underground (MUG) is expected to be the primary source of ore until 2033, with the new Wharekirauponga mine transitioning into the main production source thereafter. First ore from the Wharekirauponga Underground is anticipated in 2032. The company has an early-works capital budget of $40 to $45 million for 2025 to progress design and construction activities for the Waihi North Project. A pre-feasibility study for the Waihi District, which includes both the existing operations and the Wharekirauponga underground mine, projects a combined production of 1.6 million ounces of payable gold over a 15-year mine life. As of February 2025, an initial mineral reserve of 4.1 million tonnes at a grade of 9.2 g/t for 1.21 million ounces of gold has been declared for the Wharekirauponga deposit.

It is operated by OceanaGold (Philippines), Inc., a subsidiary of OceanaGold Corporation. Following an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Philippine Stock Exchange on 13 May 2024, OceanaGold Corporation holds an 80% indirect interest in the mine. Large-scale open-pit mining was completed in May 2017. Current mining activities are solely from underground operations, which began in 2015, and are supplemented by the processing of surface stockpiles. The underground mining method is longhole open stoping with cemented paste backfill. The operation is governed by a Financial or Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) with the Philippine government, which was renewed in 2021 for a 25-year term.
Production
Production overview - 2023: gold 138500 oz, copper 14200 t; 2022: gold 113200 oz, copper 14400 t.
Processing
The processing plant uses a conventional SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit, froth flotation, and a gravity gold recovery circuit. The combined processing rate of underground ore and surface stockpiles is approximately 4.0 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa).
Expansion
A pre-feasibility study is in progress to identify requirements to support an optimised underground mining production rate of approximately 2.5 Mtpa and to evaluate process plant augmentation needs. This study is expected to be completed in 2026. The company is also conducting exploration to expand resources, including at the Napartan prospect located about nine kilometres from the Didipio mine.
