Overview
Pascua-Lama is a gold, silver, and copper project operated by Barrick Gold Corporation, located on the border of Chile and Argentina. Designed as a large-scale open-pit operation, construction began in October 2009 but was suspended in Q4 2013. The Chilean portion is transitioning to closure, while the Argentinian portion is being re-evaluated.
Processing
Conventional mining techniques including drilling and blasting. Ore was to be transported to a primary crusher in Chile, then conveyed through a 2.7-kilometre tunnel to processing facilities in Argentina. The plant was designed for 45,000 tonnes per day throughput, involving secondary crushing, milling, washing, conventional flotation for copper concentrates, and cyanide leaching for gold and silver doré.

Expansion
A "Super Pit" expansion project was launched on 2 October 2024, with a capital expenditure of approximately US$2 billion. Construction for the expansion began in 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2028. The expansion aims to double annual copper production to 240,000 tonnes and extend the mine life to more than 30 years. The project includes expanding the processing plant to a capacity of 52 million tonnes per annum. The expansion will also involve developing the Manyama township and an industrial supplier park. A new regional airstrip is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Overview
The Libby Exploration Project, operated by Hecla Mining Company, is located in Lincoln County, Montana, south of Libby. The project, acquired in 2016, is advancing with underground exploration to gather geological, hydrological, and environmental data to determine economic feasibility. As of 2024, it has an Inferred Resource of 112.2 million tons grading 0.7% copper and 1.6 oz/t silver. The project has faced environmental opposition.
Expansion
The U.S. Forest Service issued a final decision notice and finding of no significant impact, allowing the project to advance. The new Plan of Operations has been authorised, and underground exploration and data collection can now proceed.

Overview
The Rock Creek project, acquired by Hecla Mining Company in June 2015, is a proposed underground copper and silver mine and mill complex located approximately five miles northeast of Noxon, in Sanders County, Montana. The project is currently on hold due to a 2021 court ruling that invalidated federal authorization, requiring new analyses for future permit applications.
Processing
Proposed mill complex.
Expansion
Hecla has withdrawn the previous owner's plan of operations and is not actively seeking permits for construction. A 2021 court ruling invalidated the U.S. Forest Service's approval for the mine's evaluation phase, citing violations of the Endangered Species Act. The project has no current federal authorisation to proceed, and new analyses would be required for any future permit applications.

Overview
Mopani Copper Mines PLC has since 2014 sunk and equipped three brand new shafts to replace the old infrastructure at both Nkana and Mufulira mine sites, which dates back to the 1930s. The three new shafts are Syclinorium and Mindola Deeps Shafts at Nkana Mine in Kitwe and The Henderson Shaft at Mufulira Mine site. Mopani has also built a brand new Concentrator at Nkana mine site, The New Syclinorium Concentrator. The new infrastructure is expected to extend the life of the mine by over 25 years, improve production efficiencies and safeguard the existing jobs while guaranteeing Mopani’s continued contribution to growing the Zambian economy.

Processing
The processing facilities will produce a high-quality copper-gold concentrate through a crush, mill, and flotation circuit. Construction is planned in two phases with a combined process capacity of 90 million tonnes per annum.
Equipment
The operation will be a conventional truck-and-shovel open pit mine. This will include the use of 360-ton trucks.
Expansion
The reconstitution of the Reko Diq project was completed in December 2022. In February 2025, Barrick filed an updated NI 43-101 technical report for the project. As of April 2026, Barrick has slowed development activity and extended the project review until mid-2027 due to escalating security risks in the region. This is expected to lead to significant increases in the previously estimated capital budget and timeline. The initial target for first production was the end of 2028, which is now under review. The estimated capital cost for Phase 1 was between $5.6 billion and $6.0 billion, and for Phase 2 was between $3.3 billion and $3.6 billion.

Production
Production overview - 2025: copper 73700 t; 2023: copper 40500 t.
Processing
The mine produces copper cathodes through a process of heap leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning (SX-EW). Ore undergoes a three-stage crushing process before being stacked for heap leaching, which uses chemical and bacteriological agents. A solvent extraction plant concentrates and purifies the copper from the leach solution, and an electrowinning plant produces the high-grade cathode copper. A flotation plant is also used to recover copper as concentrate from the fine fraction of crushed ore.
Equipment
The operation utilises a traditional truck and shovel fleet for mining.
Expansion
The Chilean Environmental Authority's approval for the mine life extension to 2051 also allows for a transition to a new long-term water supply, which will be either sea water or from a third-party source, starting after 2028. The mine will continue to use its existing water supply until 2028. The approved plan enables the potential development of primary sulphide ore resources, in addition to the currently mined secondary sulphides. Attributable capital expenditure for Antofagasta in 2025 was $60.8 million.
