BUMA Australia Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of PT BUMA Internasional Grup Tbk, was awarded a three-year contract in 2022, with an option for a fourth year, to provide total mining services.
Overview
Broadmeadow East Mine is an open pit coking coal project in Queensland, Australia, owned by Bowen Coking Coal Limited. Located about 25 kilometres north-east of Moranbah in the Bowen Basin, open-cut mining was paused in May 2024 and the mine placed into care and maintenance due to powerline relocation costs. Coal augering activities commenced in September 2024 as a low-cost initiative. As of late 2025, Bowen Coking Coal entered voluntary administration.
Production
The contract with BUMA targeted 4.8 million tonnes of ROM coal over four years. Run-of-mine (ROM) production for the 2023 financial year was 1.2 million tonnes, resulting in 0.65 million tonnes of saleable coal. The planned steady-state production rate was between 0.8 and 1.2 million tonnes per annum. Following the commencement of coal augering in September 2024, 25,000 tonnes of ROM coal were produced by 31 December 2024.
Processing
Initially, coal was processed under an infrastructure sharing agreement at the Carborough Downs coal handling and preparation plant. Since April 2023, all coal has been processed through the refurbished Module 1 of the Burton CHPP. The processed coal is exported via the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal.
Equipment
The project mobilised haul trucks and a Hitachi EX3600 excavator. Initial setup involved two 350-tonne mining fleets, which expanded to three in the first half of 2023.
Expansion
In July 2024, Bowen Coking Coal sold a 10% interest in the mine to MPC Lenton Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of the Formosa Plastics Group, to integrate it into the Lenton joint venture and leverage synergies with the nearby Burton mining complex.
