Overview
The Boggabri mine is an open pit operation in New South Wales, Australia, producing low-ash thermal coal, PCI coal, and semi-soft metallurgical (coking) coal, with a mix of approximately 80% thermal and 20% coking/PCI coal. It has an approved capacity of up to 7 Mtpa of saleable coal. The mine life has been extended to 2036, with a proposed further extension to 2040. It supports a workforce of approximately 875 employees and contractors.

Processing
Mined coal is processed through a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) which includes a three-stage ROM crushing system. Processed coal is transported by rail to the Port of Newcastle for export.

Conventional truck and shovel open-cut mining methods, large hydraulic excavators, ultra-class haul trucks. Acquired 38 major mobile mining assets from Golding Contractors in July 2021. Golding provides maintenance services for this equipment and approximately 50 other major mining assets on site.
Expansion
Mine life extended to end of 2036, allowing extraction of an additional 28.1 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal. Modification 10 under assessment to extend mine life to 2040 and extract an additional 30 million tonnes of coal. Installation of a 5MW solar farm commenced operation in September 2025, followed by a 12.6 MWh vanadium flow battery scheduled for completion in the second half of 2026.

Expansion

The expansion plans include an expanded workers village, a new water dam, a rail network maintenance hub, and additional mine site infrastructure.

The mine processes its own coal as well as coal from the adjacent Peak Downs mine, which is transported via an overland conveyor.

The extracted coal is processed at an on-site Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP). The processing method involves a single-stage process with dense medium cyclones, spirals, and flotation circuits to produce hard coking coal.

Expansion
The Caval Ridge Mine Horse Pit Extension project has been approved, which will extend the life of the mine to 2056. This extension involves expanding the existing Horse Pit. In December 2020, the mine set a world record for the largest electronic blast in coal mining history.
