Opened
2010-01-01
Workforce
As of 2024, the mine has approximately 500 employees.
Overview
Bear Run Mine is a surface coal mine located in Sullivan County, Indiana, United States. It is the largest surface mine in the eastern United States and commenced production in 2010. The mine is part of the Illinois Basin.
Production
In 2024, the mine produced 5.0 million tons of coal. Production in 2023 was 5.5 million tons, and in 2022 it was 6.7 million tons. Earlier production figures show 7.3 million tons sold in 2017, 7.4 million tons sold in 2016, and 6.3 million tons sold in 2019. The mine was initially planned to produce 8 million tons per year.
Processing
Run-of-mine coal is transported by truck to a preparation plant. The plant crushes the coal, which is then processed through heavy medium cyclones for coarse material and water-only cyclones and spirals for fines. Vibrating and screenbowl centrifuges are used for dewatering. The processing plant has a capacity of 1,600 tons per hour, with the potential to increase to 2,000 tons per hour. The processed coal is transported from the mine by rail via a 5.6-mile industrial spur built by the Indiana Rail Road Company.
Equipment
The mine utilizes a fleet that includes draglines, shovels, haul trucks, and bulldozers. Notably, two Bucyrus-Erie 2570-W draglines were used initially. One 13-million-pound dragline was moved from the Farmersburg Mine to Bear Run in 2010.
