Warrior’s Blue Creek Completion Shifts the U.S. Steelmaking Coal Story from Build-out to Margin
Warrior Met Coal, Inc. (NYSE: HCC) has completed construction of the Blue Creek mine in Alabama, moving a major U.S. steelmaking coal investment from capital build-out into operating contribution. The project is already reshaping volumes, costs and margins as Warrior positions itself for stronger export supply into global steel markets.

The significance of Blue Creek is its ability to change Warrior’s cost and volume base at the same time. First-quarter net income rose to US$72.3 million, while adjusted EBITDA increased to US$143.4 million. Cash cost of sales on a free-on-board port basis fell to US$96.17 per short ton, down from US$112.35 a year earlier, with Blue Creek’s lower cost structure now flowing through the operating result.
Blue Creek is not a marginal extension of Warrior’s existing platform. Total project spending reached US$1.0229 billion, placing it among the more substantial recent U.S. metallurgical coal investments. The mine sits in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama and adds a new longwall steelmaking coal source into an operating base already built around premium hard coking coal exports.

The market context remains difficult, with steelmaking coal prices still exposed to weaker second-tier pricing, freight pressure and uncertainty around trade flows. Blue Creek gives Warrior a stronger structural response to that backdrop. The asset adds volume without simply adding cost, which is the point at which a new mine begins to matter commercially rather than just operationally.
For the U.S. steelmaking coal sector, the completion of Blue Creek is significant because it brings fresh domestic longwall capacity into production at a time when high-quality metallurgical coal remains central to blast furnace steelmaking. Warrior’s full-year outlook remains unchanged at 12.0 to 13.0 million short tons of production and 12.5 to 13.5 million short tons of coal sales, giving Blue Creek a larger role in the company’s 2026 production mix.
