Anglo American Platinum Expands Mogalakwena Mine to Boost Global Platinum Supply
Anglo American Platinum is advancing expansion works at the Mogalakwena Mine in South Africa, targeting increased production of platinum group metals. As global demand for PGMs strengthens due to automotive and hydrogen applications, the project is positioned to enhance long-term supply. The expansion reflects renewed confidence in platinum markets and creates new opportunities for contractors across mining, processing and infrastructure.

Anglo American Platinum (JSE: AMS) is progressing expansion activities at its flagship Mogalakwena Mine, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s largest and most important platinum group metals (PGM) operations.
Located in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, Mogalakwena is an open-pit operation producing platinum, palladium, rhodium and associated base metals. The mine has historically produced in excess of 1 million ounces of PGMs annually, making it a cornerstone asset within Anglo American Platinum’s portfolio.
The current expansion program is focused on increasing mining volumes and improving processing capacity. This includes the development of additional pit areas, upgrades to concentrator facilities and enhancements to materials handling systems. The goal is to sustain and potentially increase production levels as demand for PGMs evolves.
Market conditions are supportive of this strategy. Platinum and palladium prices have shown resilience, supported by continued demand from the automotive sector, particularly in catalytic converters, as well as emerging applications in hydrogen fuel cell technologies. Rhodium, while more volatile, remains a high-value contributor to overall revenue.
The expansion also reflects a broader industry trend of optimising existing Tier 1 assets rather than developing new greenfield projects. By leveraging established infrastructure, operators can reduce capital intensity while extending mine life.
From a technical perspective, Mogalakwena’s scale allows for the implementation of advanced mining techniques, including high-capacity haulage systems and continuous improvement in processing efficiency. Water management and energy use remain key considerations, particularly in South Africa’s constrained infrastructure environment.
For contractors and suppliers, the expansion presents a range of opportunities across mining, processing and support services. These include equipment supply, maintenance, engineering services and infrastructure upgrades.
The Mogalakwena expansion highlights the continued strategic importance of PGMs in the global economy, particularly as the energy transition creates new demand pathways alongside traditional automotive uses.
